A few years back during our Citywide research on social housing in Kolhapur, Bondre Nagar slum located on the edge of the city was assessed to be one of the most vulnerable slums in Kolhapur due to the proposed widening of a connecting road coupled with dilapidated houses and poor sanitation. Most of the 77 families are farmhands who opposed the development of a multi-storeyed structure proposed by the government. SA at the behest of the community intervened with its multi-stakeholder approach and designed a holistic housing solution. Undertaking various mobilization activities, SA has engaged the community in an inclusive process of designing to give a clear understanding of the space and its functionality to the community members. Today the community has shifted to a transit camp and the construction will commence soon. This unique Beneficiary led construction project is on track to become a precedent for a citywide action plan to transform the lives of the urban poor.
